Sitting in the Stands

Sitting in the Stands

This photo was taken during one of my favorite times of day. I like to call it “magic hour” when just about anything looks stunningly beautiful as the sun casts longer and longer shadows before sinking into the sea.

I have the opportunity to work with some pretty incredible clients, they are diverse in their disciplines, passionate about their work and extremely skilled in what they offer to the greater good.

I can almost hear the next question before it is even asked, but here it is anyway. “So where do you fit in Jaisy?” Well, I am glad you asked!

Think of me as your number one fan, sitting in the stands, watching you play your heart out.

I watch you because I am learning your strengths, I watch you to see where you may need a hand.

Not only am I watching you, but I am also watching your competitors, I know their strengths and their weaknesses too.

And then what? Then we sit down together, we strategize, we collaborate, we share your successes, we celebrate your hard work together!

If you are looking for another member to add to your team, who can bring a different perspective, who can share your story and support you from the stands, give me a call.

Until then, I’ll be cheering you on from my seat in the stands!

You Reap What You Sow

You Reap What You Sow

“You Reap What You Sow”

While this quote has negative connotations, I find myself thinking about Reap and Sow in a different light. There have been tons of posts lately on social media with photos of budding blooms captioned “spring has sprung” with promises of new beginnings, new adventures, new everything! Well, this is my “spring has sprung” post.

I walked by this field the other day (if you look closely you can even see the drops of water dancing in the air from the sprinkler!).

This farmer has tilled the field, this farmer has planted the seeds, this farmer has watered the beds, and in time, with a little bit of sunshine, this farmer will reap what has been sowed.

How cool is that?! The way I see it, is if you work hard, if you put energy into doing what you love and loving what you do, some really good stuff can come out of all of that hard work!

In this age of instant rewards, instant results and instant gratification, waiting to see the results of what you have sown can be difficult. But like the farmer and the field, with a little bit of work, a little bit of water, and a little bit of sunshine, it is possible for any of us!

In the meantime however if you’re looking for somebody to help with your “field of work” from a communications standpoint, contact me, we will get our hands dirty with you!

Reacting vs. Responding

Reacting vs. Responding

I found solace this afternoon in the library.  Surrounded by books, newspapers I could actually open with my hands, and hours ahead of me to write.  To write for clients, to write to a friend who is in need of some words of encouragement, to write for myself.  In particular, this afternoon found me in an interesting conundrum that some of us may come to in our professional or personal lives.  I had to ask myself “Am I going to react to this situation or am I going to respond to it?”  This situation I am referring to is one I have been in before, it definitely could have masked itself as a personal attack (if I let it), or it could have presented itself as an opportunity for growth for me, for my business, for the opportunity to take an afternoon to write, and to respond.

You are likely someone who finds themselves in similar situations at work.  But your situations might be bigger.  What happens when your client is unhappy with you and your services?  What if they are so upset they are beyond consoling and are threatening your reputation?  What do you do?  Do you react?  Or do you respond in that moment?

We in the communications world call this “crisis communication.”  It is a really BIG phrase to throw around, and it is not one that I use lightly.  Have I had my share of crises to communicate about?  Yes.  Are they experiences I brag about? No.  But am I good at it?  I am.  I have to be.  When you are tasked with responding to a situation in a timely manner that is diplomatic and to the point, you need to do just that.  You need to respond.  Not react.

So maybe you and your business may not see the need for assistance in communication, or your on-line reputation for that matter.  If that is the case, good for you!  But if there comes a time when you need someone to respond for you, to be proactive for your business, feel free to give me a call, the two of us might be able to work something out together so you don’t have to find yourself reacting.  Until then, here’s hoping you get some time to be surrounded by books, or maybe a quiet spot in the sunshine to respond instead of react.

Picking a Path

Picking a Path

This is the riverbed in front of my parents house, the riverbed in which I spent many hours with my sisters catching tadpoles and looking for the best moss covered rocks on which to slide into deep pools when the river was running. Scampering through the riverbed was tricky at times, kind of like skiing, you have to “pick your path.”  Picking your path for me was scrambling to find the best, most efficient way to make it either across the river (if I was still wearing my school clothes) without getting wet, or finding the next pond in which to swim.

I was recently in the riverbed with two of my friend’s daughters. They were asking me for help “Auntie Jaisy! Which way do we go? How do we get up to that spot?” I found myself instinctively looking for “the best path.” It was so much fun (for me and the girls)! Off we went on our riverbed adventure after finding the path that worked best for them (in their case it was a path to find that big crayfish they spotted earlier).

The point of my sharing this with you is that perhaps you are in need of somebody to look for a path for your business, whether it is community relations and trying to find the best path in which to give back to your community, or perhaps it is simply trying to accomplish one of your marketing goals, and you’re not quite sure which path to take (or if there is even a path to begin with!). Give me a call, together I bet we can come up with the best path towards your goal.

Possibility vs. Probability

Possibility vs. Probability

Something about this gate made me pause this afternoon. Perhaps it was because I’ve watched the rock wall being built stone by stone over the last few months and to see it completed was pretty cool. Or perhaps it was because Waimea finally got some sunshine and I liked the way that the light danced off of the gate.  Either way, it’s pretty, don’t you think?

As I looked at it more I started to wonder about what was behind that gate. Well, I already know what’s behind the gate as I saw the entire thing being built, but that thought process alone was a reflection of how I choose to look at my life. I choose to focus on the possibility, and not the probability.

If I were looking at this from the probability standpoint, I would likely think about the barriers to how I could get that gate open. “What if it’s locked? What if there’s a guard dog on the other side? What if I can’t open the gate?”

Instead, I choose to look at this from a possibility standpoint. “What is behind that gate? What is it that I could do? What dreams are behind that gate that have yet to be realized?”

There’s an argument to be made for both approaches. So, if you know what your probabilities are in your business, but you’re not quite sure how you can start  sharing what your business can do, contact me, we can work through this together, and maybe we’ll open a gate or two in the process!

Wisdom in Experience

Wisdom in Experience

There is a lot of wisdom in experience, and this week has been no exception to the rule. I am grateful to be on the board of a nonprofit organization here in Waimea, and this week during the debrief of our biggest fundraiser of the year, I found myself sitting in a room surrounded by women with years of experience. It wasn’t just the years of experience that impressed me, what was also staggering to me was the amount of wisdom they freely shared with me because of their experience.

A few days later I found myself on the opposite end of the spectrum, having a conversation with a teenager, she had questions and they were valid questions, questions about life and challenges and how to navigate through them with grace and dignity. What a beautiful experience to speak with her, to be reminded of what it was like to be that age, and to have the opportunity to share my experience.

The same holds true with my clients, with over 20 years of experience, I have the opportunity to share my wisdom, I have the opportunity to help organizations be as successful as they can be. So, to those of you who I am lucky enough to be working with, thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my wisdom and my experience. And to those of you I haven’t yet had a chance to work with, contact me, let’s collaborate! And to all of you, here’s to making it a great week filled with sharing wisdom and experience!

Appreciating the Process

Appreciating the Process

I was in the middle of a conversation today when someone else interrupted with “So you you do marketing? Who are your clients? How many clients do you have?”

It got me thinking about how focused we can be on quantifying our version of success, whether it be the number of clients we have, how much money we have, where we live, what school our kids go to, what our title is, the list goes on and on.

I walk by this fruit tree (I think it’s a peach) through all seasons of the year.  I took this photo as it illustrates for me what Appreciating the Process is.  From the buds to the flowers to the eventual fruit, the entire process is beautiful. That’s what I love most about marketing and public relations. It’s the process.

Each client has a different end goal, one may want more visibility for their product(s), another may need to achieve a certain financial goal, another needs to fundraise. That’s where Jaisy Communications can help, so if you’re looking for somebody to walk through that process with, and appreciate that process with, give us a call!

Perspective

Perspective

This is a photo of the steepest hill in Waimea (well, I don’t know that for a fact). What I do know however, is that it is so steep that the local DMV takes student drivers on it for driving tests!

Anyway, it is a hill that I know very well, sometimes I hate it when I find myself at the bottom of the hill, and sometimes I love it once I’m at the top and look back how far I’ve come. It just depends on your perspective I guess.

I was meeting with a client this week about an upcoming event, she had a major details in place, but that was about it. She knew she needed help but wasn’t sure what help she needed.  She was “too close” to it. So what did I do? I listened. I listened to learn and learned to listen. I shared my perspective on how I could help her by seeing her quandary through a different set of eyes.

A situation that seemed so difficult at first (staring at that darn hill from the bottom) is now doable (staring at that amazing hill from the top), thanks to a little perspective.

Are you looking for a some perspective with your business or non profit? Give us a call, we can help!

Do What You Love and Love What You Do

Do What You Love and Love What You Do

“So what do you do?”

This is a question that I’m asked multiple times a day, and for those of you who have a new business or a new job, I am sure you can relate. The name Jaisy Communications can mean a lot of things, so instead of responding with a boring step-by-step analysis of “what I do exactly” I usually find it easier to answer with  “I do what I love and I love what I do, which is to help organizations communicate.”

Most of you are likely doing exactly what you love and loving what you do. But maybe you’re just not sure as to how to communicate what it is that you “do.”  That is where Jaisy Communications comes in, let us help you!   And in the meantime, in the spirit of Valentine’s Day, Hallmark Holiday, Heart Month, or whatever you would like to call it, here’s to all of us doing what we love and loving what we do!

P.S. In case you are wondering…the photo is a collection of heart shaped rocks my Mom has found over the years during her walks along the beach. It sits on my desk as a daily reminder to find love in everything!

Low-hanging Fruit

Low-hanging Fruit

One of the many great benefits of living in Hawaii is we get to enjoy delicious fruit all year round, even in the middle of winter!  But, I digress…

I was reminded today of how difficult we tend to make things for ourselves. If you’re anything like me, you’ll take a situation, analyze it from eight different angles, then come up with four or five possible outcomes and make a list of solutions depending on the outcome, because “it’s good to be prepared for anything!”

You might have a great product or service that you can’t wait to tell everyone about. And you may have analyzed your marketing/communication strategy from eight different angles. And now you might be staring at a list of solutions to the four or five different outcomes you’re anticipating. Sound familiar?

Why not just give us a call? Let us point out the low hanging fruit in your strategy, not only will we help you see it, but we will help you pick it, and make something pretty great and “fruitful” for your business!
